A view on Fishing,Community and Life on the NW coast of Scotland

Clappy Doos.

Nipped off down the road for my camera as I wanted to take a photo of something some residents took in for Robert to cook. I usually have it with me all the time and was a bit cheesed off by forgetting it. But it was worth the drive.

So it was back to the Inn for a wee photo of some Clappy Doos. The name is believed to originate from the gaelic enormous mouth and dubh, black. Was told where to get some. Robbie claimed he did not know what to do with them but whatever it was he did the residents were ecstatic.

  1. have you ever seen this, documentation of the 19th century shetland islands truck system for fisheries? whereby the condition of the lease of your home and farm were that you turn over all your fish to a certain buyer?

the same truck system was used to pay the shetland women for their knitting in tea.

Some of the landlord history in the Highlands and Islands leave a lot to be desired even taking it in the context of their time. “another day older, deeper in debt, Sold my soul to the company store ” comes to mind.

  2. the quotes in the guthrie report about the childishness and fecklessness of the islanders, whose affairs required the strong managing hand of a landlord, are truly astonishing.

I know, its the arrogance of the establishment who thought they were God’s gift to the peasantry.
